If it hadn't been for the abundant lakes, mountains, fish and wildlife in the Greenwood region, one of the nation's most famous retailers may not exist today. Leon Leonwood Bean, founder of L.L. Bean, was born in Greenwood in 1872. His love of the outdoors developed from his youth on the lakes and in the woods of this community.
Vacationers still come to hunt and fish in the community along with other outdoor recreational pursuits. Locke Mills is home to Mt Abram Ski Area, a resort catering to families. The Maine Conservation School on Lake Christopher in Bryant Pond, offers instruction in fishing, hunting, canoeing, kayaking and a Junior Maine Guide's course.
The region is home to many abandoned open-pit mines where families can go rock hounding and gem hunting for free. This western Maine region is famous for its gem quality stones, especially tourmalines. Kids are sure to find mica and rose quartz and every once and a while a gem quality stone that can be made into a pendant or ring by one of the local jewelers.
