Newry, Maine - Sunday River Ski Area

Just north of Bethel is the town of Newry, bisected by the Bear River and Sunday River which both flow into the Androscoggin.  The Sunday River area is best known for Sunday River Ski Resort, one of the most popular in New England.  Sunday River Ski Resort boasts 131 trails, 18 lifts and near 100% snowmaking capability.  The resort's Robert Trent Jones Jr. golf course is Maine newest and longest and has been named Maine's #1 golf course for two year's in a row by Golfweek.  There are seven other golf courses including the Bethel Inn Resort's Geoffrey Cornish Championship course within an hour's drive of the area.  

Sunday River is also home to a picturesque covered bridge, known as the Artist's Bridge because of its popularity with photographers and painters.

On the Bear River side of Newry, Route 26, a Maine Scenic Byway, winds north to New Hampshire by Grafton Notch State Park, home of Screw Auger Falls and Speck Mountain. The area is a hiker's paradise. The Appalachian Trail crosses through this section of Maine, the Nature Conservancy maintains a preserve at Wight Brook and trails lead to the peaks of several mountains in the Mahoosuc Range.

Fishermen are bound to find good angling for rainbow and brook trout at the confluences of the Bear and Sunday Rivers with the Androscoggin.
